Last month I posted about the South Sudan refugee crisis. Sadly, the situation is showing no signs of improving and the South Sudanese continue to flee their homes and country in their thousands.
The latest data from the UN shows that the number of people who have fled the country has passed the 1 million mark. In addition, it is estimated that a further 1.6 million people are internally displaced within South Sudan. This means that 12% of the population have fled to a neighbouring country and a further 19% have been forced from their homes.
The UN data shows that over 185,000 people have fled South Sudan since July 2016. It also provides a picture of the countries to which these refugees have fled:
Uganda 373,626
Ethiopia 292,000
Sudan 247,317
Kenya approximately 300 per week
Democratic Republic of the Congo 40,000.
Over 30% of the refugees entering Uganda have arrived since July 2016.
The peace agreement signed last month appears to be holding but remains precarious and violence remains as daily threat in and around Juba.
