The State of the World’s Children 2016: A fair chance for every child

Earlier this summer, UNICEF published an interesting report looking at the well-being of children around the world.  The study provides an excellent overview of how access to education and health care varies from country to country and the impact this has on their future expectations and life-expectancy, HIV/AIDS infection and nutrition.

As with all such reports the, the figures are invariably for the whole country as it would be impossible to include all regional variations.  However, helpfully this report includes comparative figures for those living in urban and rural communities.  This is especially helpful when working in the world's least developed countries.

For example, the report showed that in Uganda 92% of women giving birth in the urban areas will have a skilled birth attendant present.  However, in the rural areas this drops to just 52%.  I am mindful that the Nebbi region and the West Nile are rural and most of the communities are remote from health centres and hospitals.
