Nine hundred and fifty years ago today, my forefathers conquered England! On 14 October 1066, William, Duke of Normandy, was victorious at the Battle of Hastings.
Guernsey was then part of the Duchy of Normandy and hence my claim of conquest! Over the intervening years,
Guernsey's Norman identity has diminished but we still jealous guard our links to the English Crown through the Duchy of Normandy and indeed any loyal toast is often expressed in such terms. Thus, history lessons focusing on 1066 and the Battle of Hastings have an additional dimension and relevance for Guernsey students!
