Not For Me!

The rainy season here in Nebbi sees an additional source of protein return to the menu but I certainly won't be trying this local delicacy out!

In recent days, I have seen the following small huts being built in fields and along the roadside.  On first inspection (and certainly from a distance) look like temporary shelters but nothing could be further from the truth.

Framework made from reeds and grasses
Framework covered with plastic to trap the flying ants

Then structure is covered with blankets to increase heat and so
draw out the flying ants from their nests
The structures trap the ants as they emerge from their nests and then are collected to be cooked or eaten raw.   Watching people collect the ants is a bit like "pick you own", with as many ants apparently being eaten raw as put in the buckets to take home to cook.

And what does this much prized delicacy look like?

Who knows - if ecotourism takes off in this region of the West Nile - collecting and eating the flying ants could be on a bush tucker activity programme!
