World Teachers' Day 2016

Yesterday (5 October 2016) was World Teachers' Day - a UNESCO event directly linked to Goal 4 of the Sustainable Development Goals adopted by UN member states in September 2015, namely to “Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all”. The UN's new education agenda set for the next 15 years is comprehensive, holistic, ambitious, aspirational and universal, inspired by a vision of education as a driver of development that can transform the lives of individuals, communities and societies, leaving no one behind.  The event is now in its twenty second year and seeks to value teachers and promote their status.

In Nebbi, the schools were closed for the day (despite the Ministry of Education having directed that the day was not an official public holiday) and there was an amazing colourful march through the town, accompanied by musicians playing traditional local pipes and drums ...
